Introductory Music Rehearsals

Are you musically inclined and do you play an instrument? Then our big band is the perfect place for you! Here, you can make connections with students and faculty, as well as with administrative staff and people from all kinds of professions. We’re all amateur musicians who enjoy music from genres like funk, jazz, rock, pop, and even techno—all arranged for a big band. After every semester, we put on a concert, and every year we host a workshop with a well-known big band legend—past guests have included Frank Nowicky, Lutz Krajenski, Achim Kück, Monika Roscher, Meute, and Ansgar Striepens. If you’re eager to make even more music, you can join our jazz combo, which features whichever Big Band members happen to have time. We invite you to stop by our rehearsal days with no obligation. We also have instruments available to borrow if you don’t have your own. Our rehearsal space is also available to you as a practice room in the evenings and on weekends outside of lecture hours. Our band members receive a 10% discount on the online price at Musikhaus Thomann. Just come to our rehearsal, every Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Institute of Mathematics. Please register in advance at bigband@tu-clausthal.de so we can have sheet music and, if necessary, loaner instruments ready for you. We sing songs from the genres of rock, pop, and jazz, such as those by Udo Lindenberg and Apache 207, Ed Sheeran, Revolverheld, Queen, Zaz, and many others. For some songs, we’re accompanied by the groovING TUC Big Band or the SwingING TUC Jazz Combo. As a particularly versatile choir, we naturally also include jazz vocals in our repertoire and sing the songs in their original languages—so far in German, English, French, and Italian. So you don’t have to worry about standing out because of your language—we don’t always sing in our native language either. This way, you can learn to express yourself in other languages with us, far removed from the technical jargon at TU. You don’t need to be able to read sheet music to join our modern choir, because our choir director provides all the necessary parts in the correct key for download. This way, we can practice at home in our respective vocal ranges. Our choir includes students, faculty, administrative staff, and singers from all kinds of professions in the region.  You’ll have a great opportunity to network with us. After every semester, we give a joint concert with the groovING TUC Big Band and perform in front of 200–350 audience members. We’re always happy to welcome new singers into our wonderful community. We rehearse every Monday from 5:45–7:15 p.m. at the Haupt- und Realschule, Berliner Str. 48 in Clausthal. You’re welcome to visit us during our rehearsals with no obligation—you can join in right away or just listen. In the 2026–27 winter semester, the Clausthal University Choir, under the new musical direction of Gesa Sarnighausen, will focus on choral music by Clara and Robert Schumann as well as Johannes Brahms.

The choir welcomes new members—especially students, but anyone else who enjoys singing together is also welcome. Choral experience is a plus, but not required. 

At the open rehearsals, you can sing along with no obligation, meet new people, and get a taste of what it’s like to be part of a choir. Come on by.
