Successful in the application process

The time has come.

You are looking for an internship, a student job, an opportunity to write your thesis in a company or to start your career – an application has to be written and sent off.

You need to clarify what you want to learn in the internship, what skills you have or, for example, what career goals you are pursuing. Once you have clarified this for yourself, it will be easier for you to find suitable offers and employers.

When looking for a suitable internship/job, it makes sense to compare your own skills with the job offers. Extensive research is necessary in order to obtain a suitable selection of offers.

The following are suitable for this research

  • Print media and trade journals,
  • websites of companies or professional associations,
  • companies' own career portals,
  • online job portals under Links and Services.

You can also use your social network, job fairs or recruiting events for your search. At the following events, for example, you have the opportunity to establish contacts with companies during your studies:

If you are looking for an internship, you can research job exchanges for internships under Links and Services.

The written application

An informative and complete application forms the basis for the employer's decision to invite you to an interview. A written application usually consists of

  • cover letter
  • curriculum vitae
  • attachments (certificates, references)

Preparing your written application documents is a time-consuming process. You should therefore allow sufficient time. The timing of your application also plays an important role. Some companies have a long lead time before they make a decision. You should therefore send your application to the company in good time or ask when vacancies are available. An unsolicited application can also be useful if no vacancies are advertised.

The application is your ticket into the application process.

You can find out how to do this under Offers for students at our university.

At the annual careers fair "hochsprung", you can, after prior registration, take part in a wide range of workshops such as

  • Application training for technical degree programs
  • Strengths profile analysis
  • Application training
  • Business training
  • Assessment-Center training

participate.

The job interview

Your application has been successful and you have been invited to an interview. The first goal has been achieved. Now it's time to get to know each other personally. Thorough preparation with regard to standard questions, clothing, travel, etc. is very useful.

In the interview, you can prove that you are suitable for the advertised position. There is a strong focus on certain topics, such as questions about motivation, skills profile and personality.

Regardless of the outcome of your interview, a self-critical analysis is useful in order to learn from the experience for the next interview and also to determine whether the employer and the field of activity suit you.
